What is Included in Afternoon Tea at the Pump Room?

Afternoon Tea Tier

The Pump Room is one of Bath’s most iconic buildings, a grand Georgian dining room right next to the Roman Baths that has been serving food and drink since the 18th century. Jane Austen herself visited regularly when she lived in Bath, so afternoon tea here is about as historically appropriate as it gets.

The Jane Austen Afternoon Tea is a specially curated menu created in celebration of Austen’s 250th birthday, inspired by her novels and the elegance of the Georgian era. It’s served daily at three sittings (12:00-1:30pm, 2:00-3:30pm, and 4:00-5:30pm) and includes finger sandwiches, savory bites, handmade scones, and a rotating selection of pastries, all served with unlimited loose-leaf tea from Gillards of Bath or hand-roasted filter coffee. The whole thing is set beneath sparkling chandeliers with live music from the resident pianist or the Pump Room Trio playing in the background. It’s as classic and proper as afternoon tea gets!

How to Book

The check came in a Jane Austen book – how cute!

Reservations are strongly recommended, and honestly, book as early as you can. This place fills up fast, especially on weekends. You can make reservations online or by calling. They do require a credit card deposit to hold your spot.

Let’s just say someone we know booked the reservation for the wrong day (ok, it was us), the team was still incredibly according. We mixed up our dates entirely and they still found a way to squeeze us in. That kind of hospitality goes a long way!

The Jane Austen Afternoon Tea is priced at £44.50 per person. If you want to make it extra special, you can add a glass of English sparkling wine or the Darcy cocktail, made with Earl Grey tea and spiced rum.

Getting There

Don’t miss the Roman Baths next door!

The Pump Room is located right in the center of Bath, directly next to the Roman Baths on Stall Street. If you’re staying centrally (like we were at Hotel Indigo Bath), you can easily walk. There’s no parking at the Pump Room itself, so we’d recommend using one of the city’s park and ride services or arriving on foot from wherever you’re staying. Bath is a very walkable city and the Pump Room is about as central as it gets.

What to Expect

This was my Uncle & Aunt’s first time doing afternoon tea and they really enjoyed it!

Walking into the Pump Room sets the tone immediately. It’s a large, Georgian dining room with high ceilings, tall windows, and a chandelier overhead that makes the whole space feel genuinely grand without being stuffy.

We were seated at a large round table in the back, which was perfect for admiring the beautiful room. The live pianist was playing softly in the background, which added to the atmosphere without being distracting.

After selecting our loose leaf teas, the food arrived beautifully presented on a classic tiered stand. The Jane Austen menu included:

Finger Sandwiches: cucumber with cream cheese and poppyseed, poached salmon with caper butter, and Somerset cider-roasted gammon with spiced tomato chutney.

Savory Bites: an egg salad bridge roll with egg yolk confit, and Admiral Croft’s smoked mackerel rillette with caviar, radish, dill, and rye croute.

Scones and Pastries: plain and fruit handmade scones served with clotted cream and strawberry jam, plus a rotating selection of pastries that included a raspberry and vanilla Battenberg slice, and Emma’s strawberry tart.

Everything was meticulously presented and tasted as good as it looked!

And then there was the moment that made this afternoon tea truly unforgettable. We were celebrating my mom’s birthday on the trip, and the staff knew ahead of time. Midway through our tea, the pianist stopped what they were playing and launched into happy birthday. A few moments later, a staff member appeared with a small cupcake and a lit candle. It brought tears to my Mom’s eyes (and mine)! It was such a thoughtful, genuinely kind touch that we didn’t ask for or expect, and it turned a wonderful afternoon into a memory we’ll be talking about for years.

Tips for Visiting

Come hungry!

Book well in advance: This is not a walk-in kind of place, especially on weekends or during peak season. We got lucky when we mixed up our dates, but don’t count on that.

Choose your sitting wisely: The 12:00pm sitting is the quietest; the later sittings tend to fill up and feel livelier. If you want a more relaxed, unhurried atmosphere, go early.

Tell them about special occasions when you book: The staff clearly pay attention to this information and go out of their way to make it feel special. Don’t be shy about mentioning birthdays, anniversaries, or celebrations.

Allow plenty of time: Each sitting is 90 minutes, and you’ll want every bit of it. Don’t rush out the door to the next thing; sit, sip, and enjoy the room.

Dietary requirements are well catered for: The Pump Room can accommodates gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, pescatarian, and nut-free diets. Just flag it when you book.

Is Afternoon Tea at the Pump Room Worth It?

Nothing beats a cozy afternoon tea!

Without a doubt, yes! At £44.50 per person, it’s not cheap, but for what you’re getting, including the food quality, the setting, the live music, the service, and the sheer experience of it all, it’s absolutely worth every pound. We’ve done afternoon tea at some well-known spots around the world and this is comfortably in our top three.

If you’re visiting Bath, especially if you’re a Jane Austen fan or just someone who appreciates a truly special meal in a genuinely historic setting, do not skip this. Book it early, tell them if you’re celebrating something, and give yourself permission to slow down and enjoy it. It’s the kind of experience that makes travel feel meaningful.
